Separately, we had known about The Walk and Rogerseventytwo since the myspace era. From afar, they seemed to be a great Dutch counterpart to the French electro scene which was banging all over the place at the time. Later on they formed TWR72, released the amazing “Tunnel” amongst other tracks, reigned supreme over last year’s “Dinosaurs With Guns” remix competition, and we couldn’t help but cheer at their new dry infectious build up-based stripped down groovy one-note techno orientation. We are huge lovers of techno tools and we soon found ourselves playing a minimum of three TWR72 tracks per DJ set. Lately it has been an exciting time for the boys, who are currently getting massive plays from all the major names in the game, from A-Trak to Bart B More, while seducing even the pickiest DJs from the UK scene, namely Night Slugs head honchos Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990. They were getting more and more confident, establishing themselves with an easy to identify sound becoming synonymous with “sure shot, easy-to-mix-with-anything, classy straightforward 4/4 modern tool” but then we asked them to deliver an EP for Sound Pellegrino and they decided to flip the script a little. They sent us a monster of a track, a pure jewel of impossible-to-describe techno-soul called “Paradox”.

Sure, on “Paradox” the whole trademark stripped-down one-note thing is still here but the beat is not pure 4/4, it’s almost a shuffling/warped/bongo affair. On top of it sits an impressive otherworldly cut up sample of a soulful diva vibing her lungs off like it’s 2012’s official end of the world before party. Organic and synthetic at the same time, “Paradox” succeeds in merging feminine soul vibes, tribal beats and european warehouse coldness in a totally new and fresh way. Something that will talk to the tech-house aficionados, the UK garage massive and the robot soul fans alike, without ever giving the impression that TWR72 are trying to emulate a certain sound from a certain scene. My description doesn’t do it justice, do yourself a flavor, listen to the track and have a glimpse of what the top 40 will sound like in 20 years.

As if “Paradox” wasn’t enough to melt your brain in pure techno bliss the TWR72 boys played it fair and added 3 tracks closer to their usual 4/4 steez to this extraordinary package. “Impulse” takes the tribal rainforest feel of “Paradox” and straightens it into a slightly acid mental bomb in pure TWR72 tradition, evoking the alarm siren of a drifting boat in the middle of a thunderstorm, conquering the hearts of technophiles one build up at a time. Then comes the diptych “Simple” which puts the focus back on good old Dancemania-infused jacking house. Each member of the duo provides his slightly different variation on the same theme, the difference lying primarily in the drums. Roger’s vision is hard and grimy whereas Tom’s appears a bit more dry and precise. Both mixes are undeniably groovy and hypnotizing.

Techno has a soul.
