Orgasmic and I were always fascinated by Bass music. Mostly from Miami, often from Atlanta, sometimes from Seattle, coming from electro-funk, the common root of all modern US dance music, and influencing 2011’s exciting music scenes from San Francisco to Rio de Janeiro, London or Paris, Bass is branching out and infiltrating today’s new musical stylings in a major way so we asked 4 different artists from very different backgrounds to give us their version of Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team’s “Bassface”.

Wolf + Lamb and Circus Company’s new champion of groggy 3-6 mafia infused Berlin backroom tech-funk, the much-talked about AQUARIUS HEAVEN transports “Bassface” to an afterparty taking it to a whole new level, but also to a very dark place. Subtle Tone Loc undertones, church organs and greasy drums melt over Aquarius’s very own stuttering crystal meth incantations. If the early “Diary of a Madman”-era GETO boys had made dance music it would have sounded like this.

Ben Westbeech’s alter ego BREACH, whose awesome underground hit “Fatherless” (PTN records) was one of our favorite tracks of 2011, takes “Bassface” to the same kind of tribal territory as “Fatherless” at first then proceeds to dip it into pure shamanic hypnotic glowstick juice. Big build up, big business, big choon. If only MTV’s Party Zone still existed!

FRENCH FRIES (Youngunz, Clekclekboom)’s infectious “Bassface” remix flirts with the UK’s modern version of Bass music but injects heavy doses of grime and g-funk influences in the mix, unknowingly giving birth to “the UK Funky Worm”. OK that was a bit far-fetched but I had to try… This will get many rewinds.

Young Bay Area hyphy house prodigy ARDALAN (whom you might remember from last year’s Dirtybird hit and Beatport bestseller “Mr Spock”, co-produced with Justin Martin) draws into the west coast heritage of World Class Wrecking Crew / Egyptian Lover electro funk as well as the miami-via-Seattle bass stylings of booty specialist Sir Mix-a-Lot to give “Bassface” his own kind of future-Cali-bass treatment.

Bonus cut: The “Pretty Pretty Good” VIP starts very similarly to the OG but don’t be fooled, it comes with a little bit of a surprise, we will let the real heads discover and appreciate it by themselves!
