about

It’s unpleasant to write your own press sheets and it is something I have always managed to meticulously avoid throughout my astonishingly long career of rappa-ternt-sanga-ternt-house-preacha-slash-press-sheet-writa. However, with this first ever Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team EP it seems that One must face his own destiny, as I have officially ran out of ingenious plans and tricks to work my way out of it (say you remember last year’s remarkable “Forgot About Dre” pastiche!). So please bear with me as I occasionally use the third person to tell you the story of the all mighty Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team, formed by producer extraordinaire DJ Orgasmic and a poor little humble creature named Teki Latex.

Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team started as a way for Orgasmic and I to perform back to back DJ sets showcasing the label’s sound and vision while blatantly “putting the name out there”. Today many know us for our DJ sets in world-class clubs and on our weekly podcast, but two years after the creation of Sound Pellegrino we still hadn’t released a proper EP together yet. We already had collaborated in the past as members of TTC and on Orgasmic’s mighty “Sixpack Anthem” single. With L-Vis 1990 and Mikix the Cat asking us to remix them, plus Orgasmic producing “I Was Sober” off my EP, we kind of developed an interest for making music together under that moniker.

Switching to third-person mode now: the result is a banging forward thinking yet highly instictive fun EP uniting two of the most visionary minds in the french scene for maximum tantric shakin’ and poppin’ mind aerobics on the dancefloor.

Absurdly modern on first listen, “BASSFACE” finds its origins in the Atlanta Bass sound of the mid 90’s, a sound that refuses to decide between uptempo Miami bass and the half time styles of modern crunk and r&b (notably embodied by the classic So So Def Bass Allstars compilations). Add a drop of sizzurp, a fascination for the new garage scenes and a science fiction techno twist and you have “BASSFACE”. The screenplay goes like this: trapped in a mind dimension strip club controlled by a bionic wizard robot rendition of Jermaine Dupri, Orgasmic displays iPad lazers and 808-fueled riddims while I order my troops to show me their BASS FACE if they want to get out of there alive. Pagan rave incantations, medieval synths and ghostly Master P howlings make up what could very well be the first “rap” track to be released on Sound Pellegrino.

“PRETTY PRETTY GOOD” is an obvious nod to the infamous HBO cult sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. Serious micro-bells, stomping kicks and filthy slaps are displayed as I recite the manual for “doing the Larry David”, thus immortalizing Larry’s innate polygraph technique into a proper dance. Built on a house-tempo 4/4 rhythm and an infectious bassline but baring no resemblance to your usual straightforward dad-tech, this intricate number conjuring the bastard musical child of Jamie Jones, DJ Nate and Untold will have the whole club larry-dancing and making funny faces.

No remixes thou sayest? Worry not! A shiny and exciting remix package is coming your way right on time for late summer sweat sessions.
